Martin tells us that as a manager you must know the difference between popularity and respect and choose just one.  However, he warns in a big managerial role it is not wise to seek popularity.  It is better to focus on what you think is important.  Respect is important but popularity doesn’t matter very much.  A few very special people can command both but most must make a choice between the two.
