Mike started his career as a salesman for the Scotsman publication. He quickly rose through the ranks ending up as the managing director of News UK. He worked for Rupert Murdoch and Les Hinton during his rise to the top and he made the Board room of both News UK and Associated Newspapers (publishers of the Daily Mail).
Whilst at Associated Newspapers Mike was a driving force on the launch team of Metro newspaper. As managing director, he was instrumental in the paper winning New Brand of the Year and being cited as a new business case producing commercial results not seen in the newspaper industry. Mike built an amazing team who grew revenue from £100k a week to £1m per week in just 12 months. The Metro was voted winner of Brand of the Year by the Marketing Society.
Mike is a strategic thinker, but he also has an innate ‘nose’ for new opportunities – and is brave enough to go for them. A strong communicator he enjoys presenting ideas and has had many successes; one of which was getting The Sun into online bingo and a £20m new business stream, making Metro work as a business not to mention starting Chelsea Apps Factory at a time no one else was making mobile apps.
In 2010 Mike started a new business venture called the Chelsea Apps Factory (CAF), just at the start of the mobile app revolution. Over its 8-year history the company has attracted a roster of Blue Chip clients such as Waitrose, Ladbrokes, KPMG, Standard Life, Vanquis Bank, Network Rail, TfL, Telefonica, Vodafone.
In 2015 the business was identified as the 16th fastest growing tech company in the UK. Over the years, CAF’s focus on experience-led design has resulted in apps that regularly rank with 5 stars in the App Store and appear as Editor’s choice.
One of CAF’s longest running client relationships has been with Ladbrokes, helping them to develop their omnichannel strategy and lead the industry in online betting. The result of an Innovation Lab based at CAF’s offices, Ladbrokes and CAF collaborated and rolled out plans over three years. The Lab took them to number one in the apps space and they cited CAF for their success many times in their interims.
